KUALA LUMPUR: The polling day for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats by-elections has been set for September 9, says the Election Commission (EC). 

It also announced that the announced that nomination day would be on August 26, while early voting would take place on September 5.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh made the announcement after chairing the EC's special meeting on the by-elections.

The seats became vacant after the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23 following a brain haemorrhage. He was Amanah deputy president and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister.

According to Ghani, there are 166,653 eligible voters for the upcoming Pulai parliamentary by-election and 40,379 eligible voters for the Simpang Jeram state seat.
