The Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) will follow Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg's lead regarding the Private Member's Bill by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said Abang Johari so far had not made any decision on the bill.

"We will make our stand (whether to support or otherwise) based on the stand taken by the Sarawak Chief Minister.

"If the Chief Minister decides not to support, the Sarawak MPs will not support," the Member of Parliament for Santubong told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday.

Notice of the bill, submitted by Abdul Hadi, MP for Marang, was listed as the seventh item in the meeting order of the first meeting of the fifth session of the 13th Parliament which began on Monday last week.

The private proposal to amend Act 355 was brought for the first time to Parliament in May 2016 and the motion was once again tabled by Abdul Hadi on Nov 24 last year. - Bernama
