Terengganu PAS today welcomed the suggestion by the party leadership for the party to forge cooperation with UMNO to uphold Islam and for the interest of Muslims in the country.

Its deputy commissioner, Dr Alias Razak, said the cooperation would only focus on programmes involving Muslims and not political cooperation.

"For the good of the people, for social programmes, to uphold Islam, we can cooperate with them, but in political matters, it will not happen, be it at the state or central level," he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

He was commenting on a suggestion by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to cooperate with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the sake of the 'ummah'.

Dr Alias, who is in his third-term as Bukit Tunggal Assemblyman, said for the good of the people and Islam, PAS could sit at a table with BN.
