KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO Information chief Isham Jalil today confirmed that there is a motion calling for the posts of president and deputy president not to be contested in the next party polls.

He said the motion was brought forth by the Negeri Sembilan delegate and was supported by several delegates from Terengganu, Selangor, Penang and Kedah, as well as by Wanita UMNO delegates.

"However, the motion was still being debated and the decision on whether it is approved or not will be known tomorrow," he told a press conference here today.

He said the motion was an addition to the seven motions debated at the UMNO General Assembly 2022 today.

When asked why the debate session was not aired live as usual, he said the matters deliberated at the assembly were quite sensitive and critical for the party and need a heart-to-heart discussion.

On the date of the party elections, Isham said it has yet to be ascertained, but still needs to be held before May 19 or within six months after the last General Election.

Prior to this, 140 UMNO division chiefs expressed solidarity for the party's top two posts not to be contested in the party elections.
