KUALA LUMPUR:A member of the General Operations Force (PGA) who was on duty at the Malaysia-Thailand border post, near here, was killed by gunfire, early Tuesday morning.

During the incident at about 3.10 am, the victim, Corporal Baharuddin Ramli, 54, was on duty with another PGA member, Corporal Norihan A / L Tari, 39, who suffered serious injuries.

It is understood that the victim's body was taken to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) in Kangar for a post-mortem while the injured victim was receiving treatment at the same hospital as his condition was reported to be critical.

The Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador when contacted by Astro AWANI confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, PGA sources informed that the incident may be related to the actions of the Malaysian authorities to tighten border control, especially in Perlis and Kedah which makes it difficult for smugglers to move.

The group is understood to have fired shots using homemade weapons as a warning to PGA members who patrolled Bukit Kayu Hitam.
